Minor Requirements (revised Fall 2008)

The Dance Minor is designed to complement your focus in another area of study. Once completing the core courses, you have the flexibility to shape a program of dance courses that can interface with and enhance your major field of study. Dance minors have graduated in such diverse fields as architecture, journalism, music, theater arts, art history, psychology, and anthropology.

The Department of Dance encourages students to develop a close, communicative relationship with a dance faculty adviser to assure completion of course prerequisites in the most timely sequence and manner. Advisers work with you to help you design your own constellation of elective courses which reflect personal interests and educational goals. Meeting regularly with your adviser will keep you informed of any experimental or special studies courses which the Department is offering and could fulfill a requirement. You will also need to inform your adviser of your intended program of study, since preauthorization is required to Duck Call any generic course, e.g. Practicum, Workshops.

In order to enroll in a technique course at the DAN level (see Core Technique Requirement under Area I), all students must take a placement audition class. This process allows the faculty to observe your level of dance training/skill in order to place you in the technique class best suited to your abilities. This audition is for placement only, NOT for the purpose of determining whether you can be admitted to the minor program. Your interest places you in the minor. Placement auditions are scheduled every Fall term during New Student Week and in the Spring term, generally the second Saturday of May. Please check with the Department of Dance for the exact dates of the placement classes.

Core requirements should be completed by the end of the 2nd year in the program. This becomes relevant when considering electives you would like to take. Core courses must be taken graded and passed with a mid C or above, except for DAN 408 which is only offered P/N*. Electives may be taken P/N, however students are encouraged to take courses for a grade.

32 credits minimum are required for the Dance Minor, including the technique requirement (9), the core curriculum requirements (15), and a minimum of 8 more credits from the studio theory, dance science, history/humanities areas of study in the dance program.

NOTE: the 32 credits must include 15 upper division credits.  Dance courses applied to the minor must be passed with a grade of C- or better.  Most upper division courses have prerequisites and/or co-requisites. Independent study courses (including 408 performance credits) are applicable to Area 3 with faculty consultation and approval.
